In the first article in this series of 3 on the topic "Who practices the 7 Habits is Emotionally Intelligent?" I had the opportunity to write about Emotional Intelligence and the five elements of emotional intelligence
Recalling the five important elements to emotional intelligence:

Question
A few years ago, the PMBOK Guide recommended that project managers practice the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Why was this recommendation withdrawn and replaced by Emotional Intelligence?

In my opinion, PMI’s focus on EI corresponds to its focus on Leadership as the most important element of a project manager's skill set. In the traditional role of a project manager, you could have a PM who is propped up by a good support team and thus could be lacking in personal “technical project management” and “strategic and business management” skills, but yet is an effective PM due to their leadership competencies.
This formula doesn’t work the other way. If you have a PM who is lacking in leadership competencies but is strong in the other two, you have an ineffective PM. Of course, you want the well-rounded PM who carries the right balance across the entire triad of skills, but the point is made – leadership is the most important skill set for a project manager to have.
Now, when you start evaluating leadership competencies, you can use the same approach to determine the most important elements. When you do this, in my opinion, you recognize that you cannot have an effective leader unless they are emotionally intelligent, that is, they carry the personal competencies of 1) self-awareness, 2) self-regulation, and 3) self-motivation, and then additionally have the emotional competencies of 4) empathy, and social skills.
With this backdrop of understanding, I think it's quite appropriate for EI to be the primary focus!

I would like to see which of the seven habits requires the least amount of work but generates the greatest amount in return. Also I would not see that each of the seven habits would be required in equal measure for highly effective people. Have you rated them 1-7 from most essential to least essential?
To make an attempt at your question about why the seven habits was replaced with Emotional Intelligence I would say that EI is inward looking outward while seven habits is outward looking in. EI is about starting with yourself and as a result the behaviour of those around should come into line with your thinking. Seven habits is more about ybe our environment. Something that you can not always changed. Also seven habits is about interpersonal relationships while EI is about your own relationship with yourself and how that guides how you deal with other people.

Emotional intelligence is a necessary but not sufficient condition to lead
And, you can develop Emotional Intelligence by practicing the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
When PMI refers to Emotional Intelligence it does not refer specifically to Leadership (IE is used in interpersonal relationships)

It is only possible to be interdependent if we are independent
And Habit 7 is the habit of renewal (continuous improvement in the practice of 6 habits)

Laziness is the 1st reason I can think of that would prevent one from using both frames. It’s unnatural for most of us to do all these items. So mindfully practicing these behaviors will reinforce us to make these as habits and ultimately become part of our core value.

Hello Luis: Thanks for this post. I am a firm believer in excellence in leadership and all the items you listed above are very important. I liked what George had to say about how these competencies are really requirements to be an effective leader/PM. To me, these are the best in class leadership qualities whether you call them elements, skills, habits, competencies or emotional intelligence and I think that is why the PMBOK moved it all under EI- it all means the same thing.

Dear Luis,
Thank you for explaining EQ diligently! I suggest to be more specific on Self Regulation and it's correlationship with habit 3 & 7. Is it first things first without assessing priority. What does Sharpen the saw; growth imply? I thought self regulation would be more likely controlling good or bad behavior at your own.
This is just my opinion.
